Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

How ItsUporDown Diagnoses Outages

When you enter a website, our edge probes test DNS resolution, SSL handshakes, and HTTP/HTTPS responses directly from independent cloud servers.

1. DNS & IP Resolution

We query authoritative nameservers to verify if the domain resolves to an active IPv4 or IPv6 address. If nameservers fail, the domain is unreachable worldwide.

2. SSL & TLS Handshake

We verify the secure certificate validity, protocol negotiation (HTTPS/TLS), and certificate expiration to detect security misconfigurations.

3. HTTP Response & Latency

We issue HTTP probes with millisecond resolution timing. Any 5xx code signals an internal crash, while 2xx/3xx confirms operational status.

Common HTTP Status Codes Explained

Understanding what each response code means when checking website availability:

200 OKServer Alive

Website is fully operational and responded with complete content payload.

301 / 302Server Alive

Permanent or temporary redirect (e.g. HTTP to HTTPS or canonical domain).

403 ForbiddenServer Alive

Server is running, but access is protected by WAF, Cloudflare, or IP rule.

502 Bad GatewayError / Down

Edge proxy or load balancer cannot reach backend web application servers.

503 UnavailableError / Down

Server is temporarily overloaded, crashed, or down for maintenance.

DNS / ENOTFOUNDError / Down

Domain does not resolve to an IP. Domain expired, typo, or nameserver issue.
